Bad Things Happening to Good People.

Updated: Jan 19

One of the most profound situations that faithful individuals grapple with is, "Why do bad things happen to good people?" From a faith-based viewpoint, this question delves into the essence of suffering, the concept of justice, and the sovereignty of God. Though it might appear unjust that devoted and virtuous individuals face difficulties, Scripture provides various perspectives on the reasons behind this and how we can discover hope during such trials.

First, we must acknowledge that the world we inhabit is marred by sin. Romans 5:12 serves as a poignant reminder that through Adam’s sin, death and suffering made their entrance into the world. Consequently, everyone faces pain and hardship, including those who earnestly seek to lead virtuous lives. The narrative of Job beautifully illustrates this principle—Job is portrayed as a "blameless and upright" individual, yet he endured profound loss and hardship. His journey illustrates that living a righteous life does not shield us from challenges.

Yet, in the Christian faith, suffering carries a meaningful purpose. In times of difficulty, we may find that God is shaping us and deepening our character.

Romans 5:3-4 reminds us, “We also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope.” Amid challenges, we grow in our faith, cultivate perseverance, and strive to reflect the character of Christ more fully.

Another important aspect of grasping suffering is recognizing the difference between God's perspective and our own. Isaiah 55:8-9 beautifully illustrates that the ways and thoughts of God transcend our understanding. Though we may not grasp the purpose behind every challenge, we can have faith that God is in control and orchestrates everything for the benefit of those who love Him (Romans 8:28). What might appear as meaningless suffering to us could be a part of a greater purpose that remains beyond our current understanding.

The ultimate Christian perspective on suffering, though, is rooted in the life and sacrifice of Jesus Christ. The most "good" person to ever walk the earth, Jesus, suffered immeasurably on the cross. Yet through His suffering, redemption and eternal life were made available to humanity. This teaches us that God can bring profound good out of great pain. As followers of Christ, we’re called to bear our crosses, knowing that God’s redemptive power is at work even in our darkest moments.

Although we may struggle to comprehend the reasons behind the hardships faced by the righteous, the faith-filled viewpoint reminds us that God is with us in our trials, shaping us and integrating our experiences into His divine purpose for our lives. We can find solace in the assurance that our suffering is fleeting, and through Christ, we hold onto the promise of everlasting joy, where every tear will be gently wiped away (Revelation 21:4).
